Blue Collar (1978)

“Blue Collar is a rare piece of entertainment: a message picture that doesn’t insult your intelligence.” - Gene Siskel

Directed by Paul Schrader

Writer-director Paul Schrader’s debut feature remains, perhaps, his most overtly political feature film for its pull-no-punches take on race, union politics and corruption in working-class Detroit.  With a gritty, meat-and-potatoes shooting style, Schrader captures with particular authenticity the grind and release cycle--from factory floor, to home, to bar, to all night coke binge--of three auto workers (Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel, Yaphet Kotto) who hatch a plan to rob their own union.
