Affliction (1997)

Directed by Paul Schrader

After a lull in the mid-1990s when writer-director Paul Schrader found it increasingly difficult to get projects launched and distributed, he came roaring back to form with this powerful adaptation of the Russell Banks’ novel about the cycle of violence that haunts a small town family.  James Coburn won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his flinty turn as a broken patriarch whose eldest son, played by Nick Nolte, takes it upon himself to avenge the past.

Lions Gate Films. Producer: Linda Reisman. Screenwriter: Paul Schrader. Based on the novel by Russell Banks. Cinematographer: Paul Sarossy. Editor: Jay Rabinowitz. Cast: Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek, James Coburn, Willem Dafoe, Mary Beth Hurt.

35mm, color, 114 min.

Blue Collar (1978)

“Blue Collar is a rare piece of entertainment: a message picture that doesn’t insult your intelligence.” - Gene Siskel

Directed by Paul Schrader

Writer-director Paul Schrader’s debut feature remains, perhaps, his most overtly political feature film for its pull-no-punches take on race, union politics and corruption in working-class Detroit.  With a gritty, meat-and-potatoes shooting style, Schrader captures with particular authenticity the grind and release cycle--from factory floor, to home, to bar, to all night coke binge--of three auto workers (Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel, Yaphet Kotto) who hatch a plan to rob their own union.

Universal Pictures. Producer: Robin French, Don Guest, David Nichols. Screenwriter: P. Schrader, Leonard Schrader. Cinematographer: Bobby Byrne. Editor: Tom Rolf. Cast: Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel, Yaphet Kotto, Ed Begley, Jr., Harry Bellaver.

35mm, color, 114 min.
