Instructional Media Collections and Services

Updated May 3, 2024: Please note that Powell Library and Instructional Media Collections and Services are currently closed.

Located in UCLA’s Powell Library, the Instructional Media Collections and Services (IMCS) acquires and provides access to course-required physical and digital media, including educational and mainstream films, TV shows and documentaries, specifically for UCLA instructors, teaching assistants and students in classroom settings, and for non-UCLA academic researchers. The IMCS collection adds approximately 300-400 titles every year, funded primarily through collaboration with the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) Instructional Improvement Mini-Grant Initiative.

IMCS circulates physical media to instructors and teaching assistants for teaching in classrooms and for individual viewing in the Powell Library Media Lab. IMCS also arranges access to digital versions for use on approved Bruin Learn/Canvas course websites. Most titles in the collection can be streamed depending on legal restrictions.

Search and Request Materials for Instruction or Research

Search the IMCS collection catalog by title, format, subject matter, director or other terms.

UCLA Faculty and Teaching Assistants

All materials from the IMCS collection are provided free of charge to regularly scheduled UCLA classes. Requests for rentals and purchases of new media for on-campus, in-classroom use are processed upon receipt of an approved Instructional Improvement Mini-Grant application.

Orders for classroom screenings of media should be placed three days or more in advance to avoid booking conflicts. In most cases, we are able to arrange advance screenings of either IMCS holdings or off-campus media for instructors to determine the suitability of materials for use in class.

UCLA Students and Staff

Students and staff may view materials in the Powell Library Media Lab by making a request preferably three business days in advance.

UCLA Extension and UCLA Community

UCLA Extension instructors and other organizations and individuals in the campus community may rent materials from the IMCS collection. Extension instructors’ requests must be placed through a departmental representative.

Off-campus

No IMCS materials may be loaned or rented to any off-campus venues.
