The Challenges Ahead

Her First Flame  (1920)

Released in 1920, Bruno C. Becker’s Her First Flame predicted a future 30 years hence when women are the romantic aggressors, breadwinners and gutsy heroes while men are seen cooking and cleaning at home.

35mm, b/w, 20 min. Director: Bruno C. Becker.

Capturing the Flag  (2018)

Capturing the Flag chronicles the experiences of three voter protection workers in North Carolina leading into the 2016 election in the wake of a voter suppression law in the state. On election day itself, the trio meet with would-be voters turned away from the polls for a multitude of dubious reasons illustrating just how challenging it has become to realize the simple motto guiding the trio: “one person, one vote.”

DCP, color, 76 min. Director: Anne de Mare.
