Bullfighter and the Lady (1951)

Directed by Budd Boetticher

Boetticher’s semi-autobiographical depiction of his days as an American bullfighter in Mexico was a major turning point. Produced by John Wayne, the independent production was Boetticher’s first personal project (he marked the occasion by changing his on screen credit from Oscar Boetticher, Jr to Budd Boetticher) and it fully reveals his passionate command of the medium. Long thought lost, this director’s cut version was restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive in 1987.

Republic Pictures. Screenwriter: James Edward Grant. Cinematographer: Jack Draper. Editor: Richard L. Van Enger. Cast: Robert Stack, Joy Page, Gilbert Roland, Virginia Grey, John Hubbard.

35mm, b/w, 124 min.

My Kingdom for... (1985)

Directed by Budd Boetticher

Boetticher's last film blends a history of the ancient art of rejoneo (bullfighting on horseback) with a portrait of his life in retirement, raising Lusitano and Andalusian horses, revealing the passionate drive and generous spirit of Boetticher, the man.

Screenwriter: Budd Boetticher. Cast: B. Boetticher, Robert Stack, Mary Chelde.
