Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)

Directed by Monte Hellman

Two nameless young men, The Driver and The Mechanic, race a Pontiac GTO with an equally nameless driver across the American landscape from New Mexico toward Washington, D.C. in their 1955 Chevy, with a teenage hitchhiker along for the ride, in Monte Hellman’s metaphorical take on the rhythms of American life, before the interstate highway era.
