The Lady Eve (1941)

Directed by Preston Sturges.

Traveling by luxury liner, Henry Fonda’s wealthy eccentric meets Barbara Stanwyck’s con-artist, who recognizes a sucker ripe for bilking.  Finding herself attracted to him instead, she’s stung by his rejection—on learning of her original intent—and plans a revenge involving a radical change of personality and wardrobe.  Costume designer Edith Head’s creations for the star underlined her own versatility, and invested Stanwyck with newfound glamour.
