The James Dean Story (1957)

Directed by
Robert Altman, George W. George

Undertaken soon after James Dean’s untimely death, this documentary sought a degree of sensitivity and analysis that was well-met by the eloquent testimonials of Dean’s family and childhood friends, and the moving, well-researched screenplay by Stewart Stern (who had penned Rebel Without a Cause). It is an uncommonly sober and sincere statement by one cultural icon regarding the life and work of another.

Warner Bros. Producer/Editor: Robert Altman, George W. George. Screenwriter: Stewart Stern. Cinematographer: Louis Lombardo. Cast: Martin Gabel (narrator).

35mm, b/w, 81 min.
