Directed by Richard Brooks
Depicting the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital units of the Korean War, Brooks’ film depicts the horrors of combat and the human bonds that war sometimes fosters. Humphrey Bogart’s love affair with nurse June Allyson, interrupted by duty, recalls many of his previous self-immolating roles, while their vernacular together suggests a younger generation, perhaps Brooks’ generation, bred on the old Hollywood and working toward a new one.
