Three on a Match  (1932)

“You’re a fool, Vivienne.  Take it from one who has been there.”  So advises Joan Blondell’s chorus girl to Ann Dvorak’s bored socialite sinking into a boozy, criminal underworld in this scorching pre-Code classic.  The inimitable, sympathetic grit with which Blondell delivers the line lies at the heart of her appeal to Depression-era audiences.

35mm, b/w, 64 min.  DIR: Mervyn LeRoy.  SCR: Lucien Hubbard.  CAST: Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak, Bette Davis.
