John Wayne plays Capt. Nathan Brittles, a cavalry officer who must escort a major's wife and daughter out of range of the restive Indian Wars. Cinematographer Winton Hoch won an Academy Award for his extraordinary color photography, through which director John Ford sought to simulate the palette of Western artist Fredric Remington.
