Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

U.K./Japan, 1983

An international pop icon when director Nagisa Ôshima asked him to star in this intense story of brutality and attraction at a Japanese prison camp during WWII, Ryuichi Sakamoto boldly asked Ôshima if he could compose the score, too. “Yes, please,” Ôshima immediately replied, according to Sakamoto, even though he had never scored a film before. Sakamoto plays the stern camp commander who finds himself drawn to David Bowie’s enigmatic British officer. For this clash of wills and cultures, Sakamoto drew on Western and Eastern influences to create an ethereal score that felt like “music from nowhere land” that began a lifelong exploration of the relationship between musical and filmic time.

35mm, color, in Japanese with English subtitles, 124 min. Director: Nagisa Ôshima. Screenwriter: Nagisa Ôshima, Paul Mayersberg. With: David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto.
