Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

In this delightful (at times discreetly dark) musical slice of turn-of-the-century Americana, young Margaret O’Brien steals the show as the imaginative Tootie, who wistfully dreams of St. Louis’ coming World’s Fair. Alongside Tootie is Judy Garland’s lovelorn Esther and her always-enchanting contralto, effortlessly moving through gorgeous, sentiment-rich renditions of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “The Trolley Song.” A vibrant, seasonal celebration of family and growth that’s celebrated by the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry as a piece of timeless cultural significance.

35mm, Technicolor, 113 min. Director: Vincente Minnelli. Screenwriter: Irving Brecher, Fred F. Finklehoffe. Cast: Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien, Mary Astor.
