Superman: The Movie  (1978)

It’s a bird!  It’s a plane!  It’s the big-budget update of the Man of Steel that turned a comic book hero into a blockbuster phenomenon 40 years ago.  Starring a then-unknown Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent/Superman, director Richard Donner’s adaptation is an old-fashioned adventure featuring great special effects, an otherworldly hero, and a stellar cast, including Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman and Marlon Brando.

35mm, color, 148 min.  Production: Dovemead, Ltd.; International Film Production Inc.  Distribution: Warner Bros.  Director: Richard Donner.  Screenwriter: Robert Benton, David Newman, Leslie Newman, Mario Puzo.  Cinematographer: Geoffrey Unsworth.  Editor: Stuart Baird, Michael Ellis.  Production Designer: John Barry.  Music: John Williams.  Cast: Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Ned Beatty, Jackie Cooper.

Note:  recommended for ages 8+
