A Berlin Romance  (Germany, 1956)

Eine Berliner Romanze

Uschi works as a sales girl in a department store in East Berlin; her boyfriend Hans is an auto mechanic in West Berlin. Uschi dreams of becoming a fashion model, but this only seems possible in West Berlin. So she moves in with Hans, and he works extra shifts to support her. Her plan fails when Hans loses his job. She returns to East Berlin, and Hans is allowed to go with her. Produced by DEFA in East Berlin, this romantic film is just one example of many East German productions showing life in the divided city with a happy end that is achieved through integration into socialist society, which is portrayed as welcoming.

35mm, b/w, 81 min. Director: Gerhard Klein. Screenwriter: Wolfgang Kohlhaase. Cinematographer: Wolf Göthe. Editor: Ursula Kahlbaum. Music: Günter Klück. Cast: Annekathrin Bürger, Ulrich Thein, Uwe-Jens Pape.

Zwei unter Millionen  (Germany, 1961)

Berlin, shortly before the Wall is erected. Kalle works as a truck driver in East Berlin. On impulse he helps Christine to defect to the West, and falls in love with her. He makes some extra money working in a West Berlin pub, and the lovers install themselves in his little room. Kalle dreams of taking over the pub when the old owner retires. With his financial situation, it seems possible, but he is outsmarted by another investor. Even in the West, dreams don’t always come true. Another East-West romance, in this case made by Ufa Film Hansa, a West German production company.
