The earliest known surviving feature from Ozu, the story of two college students who fall for the same girl, features the master’s winking acknowledgement of Hollywood’s influence with several direct references of Frank Borzage’s 7th Heaven.

7th Heaven  (1927)


Borzage won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Director for this romance about a street cleaner and a gamine who create a private heaven on the seventh-floor of a Paris tenement on the eve of WWI.
