We Won't Grow Old Together  (France, 1972)

Nous ne vieillirons pas ensemble

Jean, a film director, and Catherine, less educated, as he likes to point out, are in a long-term extramarital affair that falls apart.  Then, comes back together.  Then falls apart, as relationships, especially abusive ones, do.  Director Maurice Pialat's mature and rigorous look at the process is unabashedly autobiographical edited from a very personal sense of (dis)orientation.

35mm, color, in French with English subtitles, 110 min.  DIR: Maurice Pialat.  CAST: Marlène Jobert, Jean Yanne, Macha Méril.

Love Exists  (1960)

L’amour existe

Pialat displays a wicked sense of humor allied with his more familiar gift of social observation in this sardonic meditation on suburbia—its neglect and cultural decay—shot in poetic black-and-white.

35mm, b/w, in French with English subtitles, 21 min.  DIR: Maurice Pialat.
