60th Anniversary Screening!

Light's Diamond Jubilee (10/24/54)

Light's Diamond Jubilee
November 9, 2014 - 7:00 pm
In-person:
Daniel Selznick

ABC/CBS/Dumont/NBC, 10/24/1954

Produced by David O. Selznick and broadcast in 1954 simultaneously on all four major networks, this astounding, seldom-seen, 75th-anniversary tribute to the electric light (sponsored by General Electric) is best understood as a time capsule of American attitudes and the voraciousness of television.  Topical comedy, stentorian speeches and dramatizations of everyday American struggles and triumphs, serve to celebrate the national character as constructed by Selznick, writer Ben Hecht, and a raft of top-flight Hollywood talents.

Directed by: King Vidor, William A. Wellman, Norman Taurog, Roy Rowland, Christian Nyby, Bud Yorkin, Alan Handley.  Screenwriter: Ben Hecht, from stories and miscellaneous material by Robert Benchley, Arthur Gordon, B. Hecht, Irwin Shaw, Max Shulman, John Steinbeck.  Cast: Judith Anderson, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Dandridge, Brandon DeWilde, Eddie Fisher, George Gobel, Helen Hayes, Guy Madison, Thomas Mitchell, David Niven, Kim Novak.

Digital video from 16mm, b/w, approx. 120 min.
