Festival darling Zhang Meng (The Piano in a Factory, 2011) continues his exploration of northeastern China’s post-socialist landscapes, here following a kindergarten director-cum-gangster, Chen Shengli, newly released from prison.  Out to settle old scores, he starts a romance with an equally tough young woman.  Barred from public screenings at the Shanghai film festival after a sex scandal involving actor Huang Haibo, the film was, nonetheless, awarded the festival’s Jury Grand Prize.

This dazzling animated work, inspired by Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and René Magritte’s painting “The Spontaneous Generation,” expands upon Sun Xun’s commissioned art piece commemorating 2012, the most recent “year of the dragon.”
