Nezha (Shaonv Nezha) (China, 2014)

Directed by
Li Xiaofeng.

Director Li Xiaofeng’s first film reworks the myth of Nezha to ponder what it means to be a heroine in a country wavering between tradition and modernity.  Meeting in high school, Xiaolu and Xiaobing discover themselves soul mates; they devour martial arts stories and the books of the Taiwanese female writer San Mao while time takes its toll.  A marriage is dissolved, a mother seeks refuge in Chinese opera, male figures pass by, maybe fragments of a dream; even friendship becomes elusive…
