A New Kind of Love (1963)

Directed by Melville Shavelson.

On assignment in Paris, American journalist Paul Newman is put off by brusque American department store fashion buyer, Joanne Woodward. Encountering her again after she has assumed a new, glamorous look, he mistakes her for a high-priced prostitute.  Bemused, Woodward feeds him fantastic, invented stories that fuel his juicy columns, their eventual, unconventional romance, and outlandish Edith Head designs that skewer the fashion world’s absurd twists and turns.

Artists and Models (1955)

Directed by Frank Tashlin.

Dean Martin aspires to sell a comic book concept to a publisher—his chief resource being his comic-book-addled roommate Jerry Lewis.  Love interests arrive in the form of two Greenwich Village beauties who collaborate on painting and modeling comic-book characters.  The offbeat comedy comes punctuated by costume designer Edith Head’s pleasingly bright and deceptively simple designs that epitomize industrious, upbeat youth.
