This Gay Nineties saga was an important and elaborate first solo assignment for costume designer Edith Head.  High-toned saloon singer Lady Lou (Mae West) is a monument to pleasure in statuesque gowns that announce her sexual prowess.  Swanning through the underbelly of New York’s Bowery, enterprising Lou embodies liberation as she collects bejeweled tributes from admirers and plays men like a deck of cards.

Love blooms when Malaysian cave-girl Ulah (Dorothy Lamour) nurses explorer Ray Milland to health after a tiger attack.  Truly greater than the sum of its parts was the sarong that Edith Head designed for Lamour in this tropical fantasy; a garment that became the actress’ nearly inescapable signature for years to come and sparked a nationwide style trend.
