So This Is New York (1948)

Directed by Richard Fleischer

Adapted from Ring Lardner’s acerbic novel “The Big Town,” producer Stanley Kramer’s first feature as producer follows the provincial family of Ernie Finch (radio comic Henry Morgan), flush with inherited money, as they barnstorm New York seeking a wealthy husband for Finch’s sister-in-law.  A catalog of human foibles and eccentrics, the film was an important early triumph for its young, independent producer.

United Artists Corp. Producer: Stanley Kramer. Based on a novel by Ring Lardner. Screenwriter: Carl Foreman. Cinematographer: Jack Russell. Editor: Walter Thompson. Cast: Henry Morgan, Rudy Vallee, Bill Goodwin, Hugh Herbert, Leo Gorcey.

35mm, b/w, 79 min.

Restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive, in cooperation with Paramount Pictures, and with funding from Myra Teitelbaum Reinhard, in memory of Nathan, Ben and Harry Teitelbaum.

Cyrano de Bergerac (1950)

Directed by Michael Gordon

Actor José Ferrer’s first of three roles for producer Stanley Kramer was felicitous: having played Cyrano onstage, Ferrer (with his sonorous voice) was perfection as the unrequited lover with the large nose, coaching his younger rival in words of love, and skewering detractors with verbal ripostes.  As directed by Michael Gordon, the florid, period drama was of a type to which Kramer would not return, but he would revisit the figure of the outsider again and again.

United Artists Corp. Producer: Stanley Kramer. Based on the play by Edmond Rostand. Screenwriter: Carl Foreman. Cinematographer: Frank Planer. Editor: Harry Gerstad. Cast: José Ferrer, Mala Powers, William Prince, Morris Camovsky, Ralph Clanton.

35mm, b/w, 113 min.
