Run Silent Run Deep (1958)

"A better film about war beneath the ocean and about guys in the "silent service" has not been made."  The New York Times

Directed by Robert Wise

A touch of Melville braces this submarine drama in which a seasoned captain (Gable) hunts a Japanese sub in pursuit of revenge while his young lieutenant (Lancaster) increasingly doubts his superior officer's fitness for command. Lancaster and Gable play cat and mouse with enemy subs and each other, both performances heightening the psychological stakes of Robert Wise's taut, claustrophobic action.

United Artists Corp. Producer: Harold Hecht. Based on the novel by Commander Edward L. Beach. Screenwriter: John Gay. Cinematographer: Russell Harlan. Cast: Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster, Jack Warden, Brad Dexter, Don Rickles.

35mm, b/w, 93 min.

From Here to Eternity (1953)

"Burt Lancaster, whose presence adds measurably to the marquee weight of the strong cast names, wallops the character of Top Sergeant Milton Warden, the professional soldier who wet-nurses a weak, pompous commanding officer and the GIs under him. It is a performance to which he gives depth of character as well as the muscles which had gained marquee importance for his name." — Variety

Directed by Fred Zinnemann

Fred Zinnemann's adaptation of James Jones' novel about criss-crossed personal destinies on the eve of Pearl Harbor was nominated for 13 Oscars, including Burt Lancaster's first for acting. In the crisp-edged uniform of Sergeant Milton Warden, Lancaster appears on the surface all hard disciplined angles in a performance fueled by the conflicting masculine codes and desires held in careful tension just beneath.

Columbia Pictures Corp. Producer: Buddy Adler. Based on the novel by James Jones. Screenwriter: Daniel Taradash. Cinematographer: Burnett Guffey. Editor: William Lyon. Cast: Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, Frank Sinatra.

35mm, b/w, 118 min.
