Arizona (1940)

Directed by Wesley Ruggles

Struggling to establish herself as the leading cattle rancher in the Arizona territory of the 1860s, Arthur’s Phoebe Titus is adept at squaring off with men who would oppose her, lining up men to help her and identifying one (Holden) to romance her. Sure-footed, urbane comedienne Arthur commands this male-dominated scenario without sacrificing her characteristic vigor or charm.

Too Many Husbands (1940)

Directed by Wesley Ruggles

Vicky Cardew (Arthur) has remarried after learning of her husband’s death at sea. She is therefore shocked to learn that he survived and is coming home to find Vicky now wed to his best friend. The awkward situation sets up a double-courtship, in which convention is thrown out the door. Arthur’s nimbleness in this comedic mode is unparalleled, as she darts from wifely duty to girlish coquettishness.

Columbia Pictures Corp. Producer: Wesley Ruggles. Screenwiter: Claude Binyon, based on the play by W. Somerset Maugham. Cinematographer: Joseph Walker. Editor: Otto Meyer, William Lyon. Cast: Jean Arthur, Fred MacMurray, Melvyn Douglas, Harry Davenport, Dorothy Peterson.
