Barton Fink (1991)

Directed by Joel Coen

New York City playwright Barton Fink goes to Hollywood to earn big money and make a difference as a screenwriter, but things don’t quite go as expected in this dark comedy from the Coen brothers.  Beset with writer’s block and mounting desperation, Fink’s problems multiply after a fateful night at his seedy hotel.  Starring John Turturro as Fink, John Goodman as his insurance salesman neighbor, and Steve Buscemi as a creepy bellboy.

Twentieth Century Fox. Producer: Ethan Coen. Screenwriter: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. Cinematographer: Roger Deakins. Editor: Roderick Jaynes. Cast: John Turturro, John Goodman, Judy Davis, Michael Lerner, John Mahoney.

35mm, color, 116 min.

Barfly (1987)

Directed by Barbet Schroeder

In the same city but far removed from Barton Fink, Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway star in the booze-soaked semi-autobiographical story of writer Charles Bukowski’s life among the down-and-out denizens of LA’s dive bars.  Rourke and Dunaway give excellent performances as a man who is frequently beaten senseless in back-alley brawls and a woman who’ll follow any man with a fifth of whiskey.

The Cannon Group. Producer: Barbet Schroeder, Fred Roos, Tom Luddy. Screenwriter: Charles Bukowski. Cinematographer: Robby Muller. Editor: Eva Gardos. Cast: Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway, Alice Krige, J. C. Quinn, Frank Stallone.
