Wrecked for Life: The Trip & Magic of Trocadero Transfer (1993)

Directed by John C. Goss

In this entertaining documentary, the denizens of a famed San Francisco nightclub recall its glory days, replete with all-night theme parties and a surfeit of drugs, drag and disco balls.  Detailed descriptions of dance trends (including a fierce use of Oriental fans) and of the DJ’s craft provide a fascinating portrait of a time that lives on in the imagination.

The Last Days of Disco (1998)

Directed by Whit Stillman

Writer-director Whit Stillman wryly employs a fashionable New York discotheque as a backdrop for drama at the dawn of the Reagan era, ostensibly only a few years after Tony Manero of Saturday Night Fever tripped the light fantastic.  Gone are fantasies of transcendence through music and participation, as sex and popularity are traded like junk bonds by a set of college graduates headed straight for yuppiedom.

Gramercy Pictures. Producer: Whit Stillman. Screenwriter: W. Stillman. Cinematographer: John Thomas. Editor: Andrew Hafitz, Jay Pires. Cast: Chloe Sevigny, Kate Beckinsale, Chris Eigeman, Mackenzie Astin, Matt Keeslar.
