Little Mother (1972)
June 9, 2011 - 7:30 pm

Carmen, Baby (1967)

Directed by Radley Metzger

In adapting Prosper Mérimée’s novella to the big screen, director Radley Metzger hit on the formula and style that would lead him to his best work: Adapt a literary classic in a gorgeous European locale with high polish and a goodly helping of sophisticated sex and seduction. Uta Levka smolders in every scene as the wild thing that lures a Spanish cop (Claude Ringer) into a life of carnality and crime.

Producer: Radley Metzger. Based on the novella by Prosper Mérimée. Screenwriter: Jesse Volgel. Cinematographer: Hans Jura. Editor: Humphrey Wood. Cast: Uta Levka, Claude Ringer, Carl Möhner, Barbara Valentin, Walter Witz.

35mm, color, 90 min.

Little Mother (Germany/Yugoslavia/U.S., 1972)

Directed by Radley Metzger

Loosely based on Eva Peron’s rise to power, Little Mother may not seem like natural material for director Radley Metzger, its South American setting (though it was shot in Yugoslavia) and violent political maneuvering a world away from the sensual ennui of Metzger’s beloved European aristocracy. To the extent that seduction is a form of power, however, Little Mother fits right into Metzger’s oeuvre with Christiane Kruger delivering a spellbinding performance as Marina Pinares whose ruthless ambition carries her from bedroom to bedroom, plot to plot to the halls of the presidential palace.

Producer: Radley Metzger. Screenwriter: Brian Phelan. Cinematographer: Hans Jura. Editor: Amedeo Salfa. Cast: Siegfried Rauch, Christiane Kruger, Mark Damon,  Anton Diffring, Elga Sorbas.

35mm, color, 90 min.
