Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
April 10, 2011 - 7:00 pm

Directed by Richard Brooks

Brick (Newman), son of Southern plantation owner “Big Daddy” Pollitt, stews in a torpor of emotional disconnection. Unable to please his wife (Taylor), he turns to drink, and to reveries about his dead, cherished friend “Skipper.” This adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play waters down homosexual suggestions, but serves up a portrait of sexual frustration and delusion that fuelled one of 1958’s biggest box-office hits.

MGM. Based on the play by Tennessee Williams. Producer: Lawrence Weingarten. Screenwriter: Richard Brooks, James Poe. Cinematographer: William Daniels. Editor: Ferris Webster. Cast: Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Jack Carson, Judith Anderson. 35mm, Black and White, 108 min.
