Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982)

Directed by Carl Reiner.

Costume designer Edith Head’s swan song came with this hilarious, comedy-noir from Carl Reiner, in which Steve Martin’s private detective interacts with some of classic Hollywood’s greatest stars through clips taken from earlier films.  The hilarious mash-up of classic and contemporary scenes called upon Head to re-create a world she had helped to invent, imagining and re-creating period costumes with aplomb.

Aspen Film Society, Universal Pictures. Producer: David V. Picker, William E. McEuen. Screenwriter: Carl Reiner, George Gipe, Steve Martin. Cinematographer: Michael Chapman. Editor: Bud Molin. Costume Designer: Edith Head. Cast: Steve Martin, Rachel Ward, Carl Reiner, George Gaynes, Frank McCarthy.
