At the onset of the Great Depression, Myron and Bessie are at odds with their grown children, Ralph and Hennie, about their futures.  Consigned by their parents to conventional lives during hard times, the siblings wish to choose their own futures outside the family system.  Co-directors Robert Hopkins and Norman Lloyd depict these struggles with empathy for all the characters, and a clear appreciation for the progressive theater of the 1930s.

KCET, 5/4/73

Directed by Burt Brinckerhoff.

This adaptation of Bruce Jay Friedman’s conceptual off-Broadway play centers on Tandy, who finds himself in a public steam bath without knowing how he got there, or how (or whether) he’s ever going to get out.  Featuring strong language, unconventional religious suggestions and glimpses of nudity, the play represented a strong dose of experimental theater for American audiences.

Executive Producer: Norman Lloyd. Based on the play by Bruce Jay Friedman. Screenwriter: Bruce Jay Friedman.  Cast: Stephen Elliott, Bill Bixby, Herb Edelman, Valerie Perrine, Kenneth Mars.
