Producer Stanley Kramer’s only Western, and the first for director Fred Zinnemann and writer Carl Foreman, concerns small-town marshal Gary Cooper facing impending siege by a notorious foe, and unable to rally support from among the shirking populace.  Perched between WWII and the still-unfolding Korean War (then experiencing dramatic shifts in public support), this stark tale of lonesome leadership is a time-capsule of contemporary feelings.
