Witch Hunt (1994)

Directed by Paul Schrader

Dennis Hopper stars as a private eye with a loaded name, H. Phillip Lovecraft, in director Paul Schrader’s tongue-in-cheek neo-noir made for HBO.  In an alternate Los Angeles circa 1950 where witchcraft is commonplace, Hopper’s magic-wary gumshoe is on a case that could blow the whole town sky high.  A multi-barbed satire of Hollywood and Cold War paranoia (Eric Bogosian plays a conservative senator with a plot to rid the world of magic), Witch Hunt finds Schrader having a bit fun.

Touch (1997)

Directed by Paul Schrader

Atypical for Elmore Leonard, his novel “Touch” contains a number of elements familiar to writer-director Paul Schrader’s body of work.  Juvenal (Skeet Ulrich) is a stigmatic who abandons miracle work in Latin America for the more low-key calling of counseling addicts in Los Angeles.  When his secret gets out, however, he’s pursued by a conman evangelist (Christopher Walken) and an Opus Dei-type (Tom Arnold), each of whom hopes to use Juvenal for his own ends.

United Artists. Producer: Lila Cazes, Fida Attieh. Screenwriter: Paul Schrader. Based on the novel by Elmore Leonard. Cinematographer: Ed Lachman. Editor: Cara Silverman. Cast: Skeet Ulrich, Bridget Fonda, Christopher Walken, Tom Arnold, Paul Mazursky.

35mm, color, 96 min.
