The 1996 Presidential election offers an excellent opportunity to study American culture and politics during a time of tremendous change. The impact of electronic communication, and the consequent changes in print and televised media make this penultimate 20th century election a prime specimen for cultural analysis. The purpose of this symposium will be to facilitate a dialogue on the media's role in shaping issues, defining personalities, and most importantly, engaging viewers as participants and/or voters. To realize this goal we have chosen a group of academics and professionals from varied backgrounds who will each make brief presentations followed by a moderated discussion which will entertain questions from the audience.
