Rain or Shine (1930)
February 16, 2013 - 7:30 pm
In-person:
Rita Belda, Sony Pictures.

Directed by Frank Capra

In Frank Capra's Rain or Shine, a by turns comic and melancholic circus story, Broadway star Joe Cook makes his big screen debut as a good-hearted carnival barker trying to keep a struggling show alive by hook or by crook. Though it was based on the popular Broadway musical, in which Cook also starred, the screen adaptation doesn’t feature any musical numbers, although both the international sync music and effects version and the all-talkie version feature two of the show’s songs, "Rain or Shine" and "Happy Days Are Here Again," as background music. Unlike the other films in this series, however, both versions of Rain or Shine feature different endings.

Columbia Pictures. Based on the musical by James Gleason and Maurice Marks. Screenwriter: Jo Swerling, Dorothy Howell. Cinematographer:  Joseph Walker. Cast: Joe Cook, Louise Fazenda, Joan Peers.

35mm, b/w, 67 min. (International sync music and effects track version), 88 min. (Sound version).

Please note: The sync version will be shown first.
