Pickle Surprise! The Eyes of Tom Rubnitz

And now for something completely different, as we salute the anarchic work of video artist Tom Rubnitz (1956-1992). Associated with New York’s East Village drag scene of the late 1980s, Rubnitz crafted low-budget, candy-colored video fantasies, mingling pop culture and counterculture in outlandish conceptions including mock infomercials and cooking shows such as Strawberry Shortcut and the infamous Pickle Surprise. This evening’s program includes numerous, never-before-seen works featuring performance luminaries like RuPaul, Ann Magnuson, Lady Bunny, David Wojnarowicz, and is curated by Dirty Looks, a traveling, New York-based queer experimental screening series.
