Digital Newsreel Archive

Networked Cross-Indexing and Browsing of Historical Newsreels
(Project Director: Steven Ricci)

This project began by placing a selection of digitized historic newsreels into an interactive environment. Navigational tools were then constructed to lead users through these resources. In its initial phase, the D.N.A. will serve as a digital teaching prototype on two topics: an overview of the decade of the 1930's entitled PRELUDE TO WAR and an in-depth examination of the Spanish Civil War. It will make use of UCLA's rare historic newsreel collection, historical essays, time lines and lecture notes. One of its chief goals is to evaluate how educators will actually use such electronic tools for classroom teaching. Its long-term goal is to make it possible for those teachers to incorporate their own notes into a network of moving image and documentary materials.
