12th Festival of Preservation
This summer, local moviegoers can experience the historical sweep and
technical wizardry of recently completed UCLA Film and Television Archive
preservation projects at the 12th Festival of Preservation,
July 22 - August 21, 2004.
The highly-anticipated and biennial Festival is "the most exciting
and satisfying film event on the Los Angeles calendar," according
to Los Angeles Times Critic Kenneth Turan.
Spanning an entire century of moving image media, the Festival features
classic Hollywood films, television programs, silents, animation and independent
fare. A highlight this year will be the opening night screening
of Stanley Kubrick’s biting anti-war classic Paths of Glory,
presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, The Film Foundation
and InStyle Magazine. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
will co-present another unique event on July 29th, a screening of
Tillie's Punctured Romance, starring Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand,
and accompanied by a ragtime ensemble led by Ken Winokur, Director of
Alloy Orchestra.
Additional offerings include classic films from notable directors including
Frank Borzage, Elia Kazan, Rouben Mamoulian, Jean Renoir, Billy Wilder
and William Wyler; and an exploration of works which use the material
decay of film their central theme.
Most programs will be at the James
Bridges Theater in Melnitz Hall. For a complete screening schedule,
