K. u. K.: Kaiser und Kinematographie
The main restoration project of 1993 involved the production of a documentary concerning all representative members of the Haus of Habsburg, beginning with Emperor Francis Joseph I, and ending with the marriage of Otto of Habsburg with Regina of Sachsen-Meiningen in 1951.
Completed by some material from the Austrian Filmmuseum and from the Hungarian Film Archive, the whole "Habsburg" Film now has eight reels with a length of 3.900 m.
Of course the original material had been preserved in earlier years; its quality however was not entirely satisfactory. So we made new wetgate-printed dupe-negatives and full-frame archive prints; an optical by reduced normal-frame projection print (because most of the cinemas today don't have a full-frame projection mask) was therefore made with the complete material. We were able to present this new production with great success in our own cinema in Laxenburg (Old Castel, near Vienna), and at the Austrian Film Festival "Diagonale" in Salzburg.
Ost & West
By arrangement with the Nederlands Filmmuseum we received from a private collector a print of Ost & West, an Austrian-US-coproduction made in 1923 in Vienna. The nitrate print was in a very bad condition, and some parts were missing.
After having started the restoration work, we got some informations about a print in possession of the National Center of Jewish Films in Waltham (USA). The problem is that they have only a 16mm-print, but with parts which are missing in our material. We are doing some experiments with blow-ups, in order to get a complete film and to reduce the differences between the original 35mm-print and the blow-up material. We hope we will be able to complete the reconstruction of this very rare Jewish film by the end of spring 1994.
