Treasures from FIAF Archives: a new Database Project
The FIAF Documentation Commission chaired by Ronald Magliozzi is pleased to announce that, with the cooperation of Susan Dalton of the National Center for Film and Video Preservation in Washington, D.C., the FIAF Treasures Database has been created through the transfer of information contained in the published volume: Treasures from the Film Archives: a Catalog of Short Silent Fiction Films held by FIAF Archives - (Metuchen, N.J. and London, Scarecrow, 1988).
Every FIAF archive received a copy of this book when it was first published.
With the cooperation of FIAF archives, it is our intention to update and expand this database, and to provide access to the information we gather.
Thirty-three FIAF archives contributed to the published volume. A list of these contributors is following. We now invite all FIAF archives to contribute new or updated information to this database.
The database contains well over 9,000 records. Our immediate goal is to update the database with new or corrected information on each archive's holdings of short, silent, fiction films, both national and foreign productions. In the near future, we plan to add non-fiction and feature as well.
The Treasures project was conceived as an aid to identifying and cataloguing films. With this information in a word-searchable database, the possibilities for assisting in identification are greatly enhanced. In fact, a number of previously "lost" films have been discovered merely by identifying them with the help of the database.
Archives who contributed to the original project - as well as those archives who now contribute lists of holdings - may request specific printouts from the information contained in the database. Since the database is word-searchable, these printouts can meet very specific search requests - from a list of Eclair films held in the archives to a list of films with the word "dog" in the title.
'Short': a short film is defined as any film of 4 reels of less (approximately 4000 feet or 1200 meters in 35mm); by 'silent' we mean any film produced or released without sound.
Whenever possible we require the following information for each film:
Original title; Alternate title; Series title; Country of production; Year of release; Production company;
Director; Performers.
In the case of unidentified films, translations of the titles into English and/or very short summaries would be most useful.
Information may be provided in the form of lists, photocopies of catalog cards, publications or computer printouts. In some cases, diskettes or data tapes can be accepted. If you would like to provide information in this last form, please contact Susan Dalton first.
We have already begun accepting information and have added many new records listing holdings for the Library of Congress and the Museum of Modern Art.
Please send your contributions as soon as possible! We will be very pleased to accept even partial lists of holdings, and we hope to have your comments and corrections on the information as it appeared in the published volume.

Cette base de données a été constituée par le transfert des information contenues dans le volume publié chez Scarecrow en 1988 Treasures from the Film Archives: a Catalog of Short Silent Fiction Films held by FIAF Archives dont chaque cinémathèque affiliée à la FIAF a reçu une copie lors de sa parution.
Comptant sur la collaboration des archives de la FIAF, nous entreprenons maintenant la mise à jour et le développement de cette base de donnée, tout en nous préoccupant de l'accessibilité des informations qui seront recueillies.
Un total de 33 archives, dont vous trouverez la liste ci-dessus, avaient initialement contribué à l'édition sur support papier. Nous invitons maintenant toutes les archives à participer à la mise à jour informatisée.
Cette base de données contient actuellement plus de 9000 enregistrements dont nous voulons, dans un premier temps corriger les informations pour ensuite en ajouter de nouvelles. Nous souhaitons donc recevoir de votre part toutes les informations disponibles concernant vos collections de court-métrages muets de fiction. A moyen terme nous prévoyons ajouter les films muets autre que fiction, ainsi que les longs métrages.
Ce projet a été initialement conçu pour faciliter l'identification et le catalogage des films, et à ce jour il a servi à quelques reprises à identifier certains films considérés comme perdus. En ce sens, le mode de recherche mot par mot a beaucoup augmenté les chances d'identification.
Les archives ayant contribué au projet initial, ainsi que celles qui fournissent des information pour la base de données, peuvent dès maintenant demander une liste imprimée de son contenu. Grâce à son mode de recherche mot par mot, ces demandes peuvent être très spécifiques: on peut, à titre d'exemple, se faire imprimer tous les films Eclair, ou encore, tous les films dont le titre comprend le mot "chien".
Le 'court métrage' correspond à tout film de quatre bobines ou moins (environ 4000 pieds ou 1200 mètres), tandis que le 'muet' reprend tout film produit ou sorti sans son.
Pour chaque film, nous désirons recevoir les éléments suivants:
Titre original; titre alternatif; titre de la série; pays de production; année de sortie; société productrice; réalisateur; acteurs-trices. Dans le cas de films non identifiés, la traduction anglaise du titre et/ou un court résumé du contenu seraient très utiles.
Les informations peuvent être acheminées sous forme de listes, photocopies de fiches de catalogue, publications ou liste d'imprimante. Vous pouvez également les faire parvenir sur disquettes ou bande informatique, cependant nous vous prions, auparavant, de consulter Susan Dalton.
Plusieurs nouveaux enregistrements, principalement en provenance du Museum of Modern Art et de la Library of Congress, ont déjà été saisis. Vous êtes donc priés d'envoyer votre contribution le plus rapidement possible, même une liste partielle. Nous espérons également recevoir vos commentaires ainsi que les corrections s'il y a lieu, sur le contenu du volume paru en 1988.
