National Film Archive of the Republic of China

In 1975, the Motion Picture Development Foundation of the Republic of China was established by the Government Information Office in order to provide a resource for the research of film and help develop and improve the making of films. Recognizing the growing problem of lost films and lack of environment for film research, the Foundation took on responsibility to set up a Film Library in Taipei in 1978. The Foundation was re-organized and upgraded to a national level. In August 1992, it was officially renamed the National Film Archive (NFA) of the Republic of China, which is financially supported by the Government Information Office. This reorganization and renaming of the NFA reinforces and emphasizes the importance of the Archive as a key guardian of Chinese films as cultural assets, help develop the national motion picture industry, promote film art and culture, and encourage historical research. The NFA has a large screening room, video facilities, a reading room and storage facilities.

The NFA is made up of Administration, Information, Exhibitions and Publications Departments. The Information Department has over 7,600 films from around the world, 4,000 videotapes, over 8,000 copies of books and magazines in various languages, and over 80 periodicals. The films and video include documentaries, commercial fiction films and experimental films. The Information Department collects and catalogues all film-related materials, interviews and periodically organizes film festivals. The Exhibition Department helps organize activities on a monthly basis. These thematic presentations focus on specific categories of films by director, subject or genre. The activities include screenings and lectures. The Publications Department is responsible for publishing The Movie, a bi-monthly periodical, the Film Year Book and other publications.

The NFA has received numerous donations of film-related materials from many private institutions and persons, set up a "National Film Research Center", made hundreds of interviews and compiled hundreds of files on film personalities and film companies, theaters and film copies. The NFA has successfully helped to push forward and enforce a policy by which all applicants for government grants are required to provide prints to the NFA for preservation.

In the international field, the NFA participates to International Film Festivals, provides study materials and encourages the international exchange of film culture.

Issues de la "Fondation pour le Développement du Cinéma de la République de Chine" (fondée en 1975 à Taipei) et de la "Cinémathèque" (créée en 1978) les Archives Nationales du Film de la République de Chine (NFA of the Republic of China) ont obtenu le statut national en août 1992. Par cette réorganisation, et avec la nouvelle dénomination, l'Institution entend accentuer l'importance accordée au rôle du cinéma dans la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel chinois. Le NFA de la R.O.C. est subdivisé en départements (Administration, Information, Programmation et Publications).

En 1975 se instituye en Taipei la Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Cinematografía y en 1978 se crea, también en Taipei, la Filmoteca. Ambos organismos, agrupados bajo el nombre de Filmoteca Nacional de la República China (National Film Archive of the Republic of China), obtuvieron el estatuto nacional en agosto de 1992. Bajo este nuevo nombre, y estructurada en cuatro departamentos, (Administración, Información, Programación y Publicaciones), intenta valorar la importancia del cine para la conservación del patrimonio cultural de China.
